Yall,
Since hearing that Kia completely redesigned the Optima and renamed it K5 for 2021, I have been extremely excited. Why? Well for one I am a huge fan of the Kia brand, so anything they produce I am interested. Secondly, I loved its predecessor (The Kia Optima), and three I was dying to check out the differences between the two vehicles.
Last week I had the pleasure of testing it out and as I expected your girl was in sedan heaven. This sporty midsize sedan is longer and wider than the Optima, making it look and feel more aggressive and bolder. Additionally, It is extremely fun to drive, really fast (0 to 60 in 5.8 secs) and has great handles.
A few other things that I noticed is that the cabin is very spacious and is full of lots of safety tech. Oh and its versatility is everything! I would say it has an alter-ego. Meaning great for work/running errands during the week and all play on the weekends.

2021 KIA K5 EX Midsize Sedan Review
Kia replaces nameplate
As stated above, Kia changed the naming scheme for 2021 from Optima to K5. How did they do it? Well, by using alphanumeric characters, which it seems as if they will be following suit of luxury manufacturers, that tend to also use numbers and letters (Audi A6, Genesis G80, Lexus ES250, Cadillac CT5, etc) rather than car names – like “Optima”…

Excellent article, Dawn! I agree with your standpoint. The K5 definitely boasts an alter-ego, and I think lots of consumers would appreciate that. What’s amazing is the fact that you’re experiencing that “alter-ego” in the standard 1.6T. Just image how breathtaking the K5 GT is (with class-leading torque). 🤩
I really admire Kia’s key fob design, too! Extremely unique, yet still very functional. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Regarding the new naming scheme, at first I was skeptical, but after hearing your insight and noticing how Mazda also using this nomenclature style, I was more accepting of the name change. It’s not that the Optima had a bad reputation, but instead, Kia is trying to reinvent themselves by offering fresh vehicles that exude more daring personalities (and apparently names too)!
All in all, you did a wonderful job with this article. Chock-full of info for someone who wants to quickly know the important differences between each trim level, but still extremely informative.Plus, your personality really shines. I like how you add splashes of it hear and there within these write-ups. Keep it up! 👍🏼
LOVE all the details! Thank you for sharing!
